A Casual Intro to the Series

Final Fantasy is not really a series.  It is more like a collection of unrelated stories that have similar themes.

An interesting fact: my friend Mike B. has pointed out that, even though the Final Fantasy series is neither a series nor related plotwise up until FF X, there are TWO common things in all of the games, starting at FFII (IV Japan). Question: Can you name the two common features? (the answer is at the bottom of this page.)

Did you know this??  The odd-numbered games in this series focus on gameplay, and the even-numbered ones focus on plot.

FINAL FANTASY III (6 in Japan)

This game was the best possible game for Super Nintendo (okay, maybe Chrono Trigger surpassed it in some ways), which was the system with the best games ever (with Playstation, but no other 3D game systems, 3D gaming is only beginning to tap it's resources and make games that are actually cool).  This was the first Final Fantasy game that I played.  This was my favorite Final Fantasy for a long time, even while playing FFVII.

Ok, the graphics look really old now, but you really get into it.
Each one of the many characters are very well developed.
The game even contains a whole dangerous scenario that
occurs at an opera house--I'll not spoil it if you end up playing it--
most people consider that their favorite part.

I might get the re-release of this SNES game for PlayStation!
(Final Fantasy Chronicles, which includes this game and
Chrono Trigger, with movie sequences added for the beginning
 and ending of each game)

However, FF7 became the favorite once I saw the ending...

...

This Game is still my favorite Final Fantasy, but I wish Square would redo it with modern graphics.  Now there are fan-made patches so the game can work in Windows XP with MANY high-res characters (battle-quality) !!  And, if you have SBLive or Audigy -- you can actually get the original PSX LATIN VOCALS in One-Winged Angel!

Upon beating this game, I really felt as though I had saved the world.  What other game can do that?  In my experience, no other game ending compares to the ending of this game!

I am currently playing through it again using the patches in my tutorial above -- o and it looks better than ever -- hopefully the Higher Resolution FFVIIPC project will get the smooth backrounds working.  At least using my tutorial you can get rid of the glitches and most of the low-polygon characters (and, if you use the TV output on your video card like I do, the game and backgrounds look fantastic; since it was designed for playing on TV using PlayStation).

When I played the demo for PC, I  got the distinct impression that I was playing as a character...who was going to college to learn...the final fantasy viii game interface!  That ruined my view of the game for a long time.  My friend later bought the game and played through it.  He recommended it highly, and years later showed me the graphics of the real game.  I was impressed, but I wasn't sold yet, especially because of the romance aspect (which, I found out, comes and goes but actually the game is about friendship, war, and trying stop destiny too).  Another friend just recently (2005) was very excited about the game, and let me borrow his copy.  So am finally played Final Fantasy 8. After getting to the 4th (last) disk, and I thought that it has got to be the best one yet, because not only does the story actually turn out to be colorful; but also Squall turns out to actually be smart and strong-minded, and not just a freudian stoic figure with no communication skills--just overly professional and, ok a little freudian.  His character shows that with a quiet person, there are always MUCH bigger things going on than you can see  that is one good thing about the game.

I think though, that I finally identified what makes me not like Final Fantasy VIII as much as the other games...

The answer to the Question at the top is: Each have someone named Cid (no relation to each other), and each have the Chocobo!
